Get Going in 2021

Now that we’ve taken a look back at the past year, let’s get moving into the new one! What’s that you say? It’s already more than a whole week into the new year? I’m too late to put this message out there? I don’t think so! As I wrote back in February of 2018, It’s Never Too Late to Have a Happy New Year.

Sure, by now, many people have already forgotten or given up on their New Year’s Resolutions because, well, honestly, most of us are not all that resolute in our Resolutions. New Year’s Resolutions for many have become little more than a party game like charades, or whatever is popular these days. You’re going to a New Year’s Eve party, and you know someone is going to ask what your resolutions are, so you better have an answer, lest you get cut out for failure to participate. But who checks up on whether you followed through on those resolutions? In fact, many people just make the same resolution to exercise, lose weight, and make more money, year after year.

Let’s make THIS year different! Let’s get started now (whether you read this the day it’s published, or weeks, months or even years later)! Start by taking a small step. ANY step that is pointed in the direction that you want to go. Don’t know what step to take? Then your first step is to spend time thinking about what steps you could take. Even if that’s all you do as step 1 is to think about it, that’s still a step in the right direction. If you think you can handle a second small step, might I suggest that you also write down what you came up with?

Tomorrow, take another step. And the next day…and the next. You see, John Maxwell teaches us that the secret to our success is found in our DAILY agenda. Simon Sinek reminds us that we are playing an Infinite Game, so there is no winning or losing; just keep playing. And if you missed a day (or a week or a month) on your journey, just start playing again.

Seth Godin, in his book The Practice, tries to drill into our heads this same idea. One day at a time…step by step…drip by drip…doing (or playing). A writer writes! Actors act! Leaders lead! Don’t wait to be struck by inspiration or the muse, start taking action…regularly. Seth says day by day, like your job. But any regular practice is better than no regular practice. Don’t wait to be selected by some outside authority…select yourself. Don’t wait to get good…get going!

You’ve heard many of these sayings time and again…now stop just listening, and start doing. I’m going to be posting new writings here regularly this year. I intend for it to be weekly. But you know what I’ll do if I miss a week? I’ll just post again. No condemnation…no guilt. Just more practice.
